Macbeth & BLOOM Sustainable Materials
by Michael Puglisi
·
Macbeth now incorporates BLOOM algae-based foam technology in all outsoles, utilising reclaimed algae biomass.
About BLOOM and Why Macbeth Footwear has partnered with them:
BLOOM Sustainable Materials transforms algae—specifically from harmful algal blooms—into eco-friendly materials used in consumer products like footwear, sporting goods, and accessories.
🌱 What BLOOM Does
BLOOM harvests nuisance algae from freshwater ecosystems, helping to:
- Restore water quality by removing excess algae.
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing petroleum-based materials.
- Capture carbon through algae’s natural photosynthesis process.
🧪 How It Works
- Algae Harvesting: Algae is collected from lakes and ponds where it grows excessively.
- Drying & Processing: The algae is dried into flakes, then refined into a green powder.
- Pellet Formation: This powder is blended with polymers to create pellets.
- Product Manufacturing: These pellets are used to make foam and rubber for products like shoe soles, yoga mats, and more.
🌍 Environmental Impact
- Each product made with BLOOM materials includes eco-facts, showing how much water was cleaned and how much CO₂ was captured.
- BLOOM materials can reduce the environmental impact of foam components by up to 40%
